Healthcare Support Staffing: The Fastest-Growing Domestic Workforce Segment

BLS projects healthcare occupations to grow much faster than average from 2024 to 2034, with about 1.9 million openings per year. Healthcare and social assistance is projected to add about 2.0 million jobs, the most of all major sectors.

Healthcare support staffing is becoming one of the most important workforce segments in the U.S. labor market. Demand is expanding across home care, medical offices, senior services, therapy support, nursing support, patient transportation, community care, and front-line healthcare operations.

This growth is being driven by population aging, chronic care needs, outpatient care expansion, and the shift toward lower-cost community-based services. Employers now need more than licensed clinical staff. They also need reliable support workers who can assist with scheduling, patient flow, daily care, documentation, mobility support, and basic service coordination.

The strongest hiring strategies will focus on role clarity, background screening, communication ability, attendance reliability, and retention planning. Healthcare employers that wait until staffing gaps appear will face higher turnover and weaker service continuity.
